Recycling biz helps men start over

Delmond, employee of Green Recycling Works, a service of City Gospel MissionMatthew Long spent 25 years at Citibank, four years pastoring a church and another four leading a Christian school in Newtown.

But his most rewarding career is just beginning.

Long joined City Gospel Mission last December. His charge from the Over-the-Rhine homeless shelter and drug rehab facility for men was to establish a social enterprise — a business that could put men to work and help supplement the budget.

Specifically, Long would open a new recycling company. He and a team of workers would collect from small businesses, schools or churches old clothing, carpet and books, aluminum, plastic and cardboard, and find scrap yards or manufacturers to buy and use the items to make new products.

Green Recycling Works opened for business October 17th.

But the enterprise is much more than a money-maker for City Gospel Mission. The true work, Long says, is helping men put their lives back together.
